I work for the secret society in fashion. Everyone knows the name, but we are rarely mentioned. Our work is to bring life out of a sketch or out of undeveloped conceptual ideas. We work under a cloud of imagination but, at the same time, follow the rules.
We are the patternmakers.
Patternmakers have a combination of engineering and design skill. They need to be able to understand what the designer wants, and translate that into a pattern that will cause the garment to fit correctly. Ideally, the pattern captures not only the fit, but also the flair intended by the designer. Patternmaking is taught in conjunction with fashion design education, as it is vital for designers to understand the apparel development process. This craft is relatively unknown outside of the fashion industry, and expert patternmakers such as Sarto Anthony Knight are a rare breed.
